SUNNAN lamp campaign Sunnan - IKEA and UNICEF help enlighten children
Since June 2009, UNICEF receives one SUNNAN solar-powered lamp for every SUNNAN sold in IKEA stores worldwide. This will enable children in homes without electricity to do their homework even after dusk.
The first donations go to UNICEF in Pakistan, helping children in refugee camps and remote villages without electricity in two provinces. The province of Balochistan was struck by a major earthquake in October 2008, when thousands of people became homeless and several hundred schools were destroyed. In the North West Frontier province, unrest has affected half the population and displaced many thousands.
SUNNAN donation campaign turns 1!
In June 2010, it is one year since the SUNNAN solar lamp campaign started. So far, around 500,000 lamps have been sold. The two best selling SUNNAN countries are Japan and Italy followed by Germany, Switzerland and France. In FY11, IKEA hopes to sell one million SUNNAN lamps worldwide in order to enable the same amount of lamp donations to UNICEF and Save the Children. “Millions of children can’t draw, write or read after sunset, limiting their horizons and possibly their futures,” said Marianne Barner, head of IKEA Social Initiative. “We hope our lamps are a small but important contribution to improving the lives of children in developing countries.”
Lamps have been donated by UNICEF to children in remote areas of Pakistan and to rural school children in India, and by Save the Children to children in the cotton districts in Maharashtra, India.
